KDDI America

GenAI Summit San Fransisco 2024

Introduction

In recent days, one of the most notable tech trends to emerge is "Physical AI," also referred to as Robotics AI or Real World AI. This concept is expected to significantly advance the application of AI across various industries, including robotics and autonomous driving.

One startup company at the forefront of developing humanoid robots utilizing Physical AI is Apptronik.

What is Apptronik?

Founded in 2016 as a spinout from Human Centered Robotics Lab at the University of Texas at Austin, Apptronik has introduced a versatile robot named Apollo. As evident from their homepage, Apollo possesses a humanoid form, complete with expressions that convey a sense of friendliness. This human-friendly design is intended to minimize discomfort for humans working alongside robots.

Apptronik has announced business collaborations with organizations such as NASA and Mercedes-Benz, aiming to automate traditional physical routine manual tasks, such as parts delivery and assembly on factory production lines.

Endnote

At this year's CES, Apptronik publicly demonstrated its robots for the first time. The robots performed tasks such as dice rolling as well as recognizing & boxing objects, showcasing the integration of vision and task execution and the precision required for fine motor movements. While the range of tasks currently executable remains limited, the movements were impressively smooth, offering a glimpse into a future where humans and robots coexist seamlessly in workplaces.

The evolution of Physical AI and robotics is a fascinating topic, as it promises to redefine how labor and collaborative work are approached across various industries.
