Recently, generative AI’s such as ChatGPT are gaining spotlights all around the world. But do we actually know what “Generative AI” is, and what they do? Is it really safe to use? I am sure a lot of us have these questions in mind. We will talk about generative AI in blogs for this month and next month to see what generative AI is really about!

I. What is Generative AI?

To begin with, let’s cover the basics. AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a technology that was created to imitate human thinking and knowledge with computers. Within the category of AI, there are machine learning, language processing, deep learning, and other advanced technologies. Below, you can see the relationships between these different types of technologies.

As you can see from the above diagram, there is a technology called “Machine Learning” within the field of AI, which utilizes enormous amount of information to carry out certain tasks. Furthermore, within that technology, there is “Deep Learning,” which is a technology that lets computers learn from given data set. Many of the generative AI’s currently out are mostly part of this technology.

Let us summarize what “Generative AI” within a couple sentences:

Generative AI is: AI that can generate things like pictures, written sentences, sounds (including voices mimicking actual humans), program codes, and more. AI that “learned” from a large amount of data can start to generate contents that are close to what humans create.

Recently, there are many news articles being published for generative AI:

　● Stable Diffusion (August 2022) : Generated an image

　● ChatGPT (November 2022) : Generated texts

Stable Diffusion was originally developed by an English company named “Stability AI.” It specializes in image generation. On August 22nd, 2022, this AI service went live for across the globe. Stable Diffusion can generate any images using text inputs from users.

II. What is ChatGPT?

Now, let’s look at a service that is gaining global attention, ChatGPT.
To start off, allow me to explain some technical wordings.
ChatGPT is an AI based chat service developed by OpenAI using GPT-3 Engine.

Main characteristics of ChatGPT is as follows:

　● Able to carry out natural conversations

ChatGPT is built upon natural language processing, and therefore, it can communicate just like humans do. Because of this, it can naturally talk to users.

　● It can be utilized in wide variety of scenarios

ChatGPT is an AI model that is extremely flexible. It can be utilized in a wide variety of scenarios such as customer service, marketing, technical support, and other tasks. However, it is important to note that using ChatGPT for such tasks can come with risk of plagiarism and other possible errors. We will cover the risks of using ChatGPT in our next blog post, so stay tuned!

　● Knowledge base built from enormous data

ChatGPT learns from a ginormous dataset. Because of that, ChatGPT can give advanced responses to a wide variety of topics. GPT-3.5 has around 355 billion parameters and GPT-4 has around 100 trillion parameters. GPT-4 can also detect image inputs in addition to text inputs.

*ChatGPT learns from data set from before October 2021, so it cannot generate accurate responses to things that happened after that time.

● Responses with context in mind
ChatGPT can understand the context of conversations with a user and keep natural flow of conversion going.

● Personalized responses
ChatGPT can personalize its responses depending on the user. ChatGPT can detect context and flow of any conversations to give appropriate responses.

However, it is important to note that ChatGPT does not guarantee the accuracy of information that it provides to its users. Please be cautious when using ChatGPT for any of your questions.
