Summary

Since their establishment in 1918, Nitto Denko have been developing and expanding their technologies, providing a wide range of products in various fields, including the electronics industry, automotive, housing, infrastructure, environment, and healthcare. Addressing workplace accidents occurring in factories and achieving a safer working environment was an urgent issue for the company.

Challenges

In China, annual safety training was previously conducted by the company's experts touring with two trucks equipped with standardized facilities. However, the spread of COVID 19, along with movement restrictions and infection risks, made it difficult to conduct training tours as planned. Additionally, significant costs were incurred for truck maintenance, adapting to new equipment, and covering the whole of China, necessitating cost reduction measures.

Solution Implementation

Nitto Denko, having dealt with safety training challenges for many years, resolved these issues by introducing a training solution utilizing Virtual Reality, or VR. Previously, the truck-based safety training could not allow workers to experience actual accidents, making it difficult to fully teach them the level of danger. However, with VR, workers can realistically experience hazardous situations in a virtual environment, such as roller entanglement accidents, accidental ignition due to static electricity during roller cleaning, and falls from heights due to negligence. As a result, workers' safety awareness has dramatically improved, enabling individuals to properly be aware of risks before starting their tasks.

Why KDDI Shanghai was Chosen

The VR solutions provided by KDDI Shanghai reproduce actual factory environments with very high precision, creating an exceptional sense of realism. By exposing employees to dangerous situations virtually, Nitto Denko hoped to significantly enhance their safety awareness.

Effects and Changes After Introducing the VR Solution

  • Significantly Reduced Annual Training Costs

Previous safety training required two trucks to visit each factory, but with the introduction of the VR solution, this was reduced to just one truck.

Previously whenever the safety training content was revised, the trucks needed to be equipped and sent on a nationwide tour. After introducing the VR solution, new scenarios could be simply created and added, with anyone able to experience the training without time constraints.

This led to a fundamental review of safety training methods and easier training coverage for newly introduced equipment, significantly reducing annual costs .

  • Fostered Awareness of Safety among Employees

In pursuing realism in VR, actual factory data was meticulously collected to create highly precise content. Employees who experienced the VR training commented, "It felt so real that I broke into a sweat from fear and even let out a scream," and "I was surprised to experience a sense of fear that I wouldn't have through classroom learning."

Currently, this VR system has been implemented in 10 factories nationwide, with approximately 4,000 employees (as of 2024) undergoing training annually, enabling effective human resource development.

  • Contributed to the Promotion of Company-wide DX (Digital Transformation)

The introduction of VR, a first for Nitto Denko, not only improved safety training but also positively impacted the promotion of DX within the Nitto Denko China Group.

Ms. Pu from Nitto Denko have high praise, remarking, "The transformation brought by this VR solution has greatly inspired many employees. By utilizing digital technology, we have realized the potential to improve operational efficiency and build new business models, leading to a wave of DX spreading within Nitto Denko."

Scenario Example

A scenario where you can experience the risk of ignition due to static electricity during roller cleaning

  • When cleaning the surface of the roller, there is a risk of ignition due to static electricity. It is necessary to perform cleaning with the appropriate attire and correct procedures.
  • After stopping the rotation of the roller, clean it following the correct procedures. If done incorrectly, fire may occur.
